Featured Items

Peaches are still available for a few more days but will soon end. Blueberries are done. Paula Red apples are in the market. U-Pick Paula's are done. W now have Golden Supreme, Gala, and Honeycrisp in the market. U-Pick Honeycrisp is NOT ready yet but probably soon. McIntosh (we pick) will be available this weekend..

Sparta Festival

The Sparta "Harvest on the Ridge Apple Festival", was a great success in 2009 and 2010 will be even better. You can download the 2010 schedule of events and scarecrow contest rules at www.spartachamber.com .  We will also have the contest rules available at the market.

 

 Put Sept. 24-25 on your calendar and consider entering the scarecrow contest.

Grandma's Apple Pie Print E-mail
Grandma Rose Steffens Apple Pie
(Serves 16-20)

Step 1: Egg Yolk Pastry Crust

5 cups flour Grandma Steffens Apple Pie
½ t. baking powder
4 t. sugar
1 ½ c. lard or shortening
½ t. salt
2 egg yolks











  • Combine dry ingredients and cut in shortening.
  • Place egg yolk in measuring cup and stir until blended, then add enough cold water to make a scant cupful. Sprinkle over mixture and stir.
  • Makes three 9" two crust pies or one jelly roll/cookie sheet (15 ½ x 10 ½) pan.

Step 2: Filling

5 lbs. apples, peeled and sliced thin
3/4 c. white sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 t. salt
½ t. nutmeg (optional)
1 t. cinnamon

  • Lay egg yolk pastry crust in bottom of pan
  • Place half the apples on crust and sprinkle with half of mixture.
  • Place remaining apples in pan and sprinkle with remaining mixture.
  • Cover with egg yolk pastry crust.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 50 minutes.
  • Top with 1 c. confectioners sugar mixed with 2 T. of milk.
